Mobility Roadshow 2010 – RGK running Sports Arena
RGK are once again attending the Mobility Roadshow, which is this year being held at the East Of England Showground, Peterborough on 1st - 3rd July.
As well as having a small stand at the show, RGK are running the Sports Arena where you can participate in a number of different sports including basketball, rugby, sledge hockey, dancing and wheelchair skills. All activities are intended for public participation, regardless of whether you are disabled or able-bodied, and RGK are providing a number of chairs for people to use in the sessions.
RGK will have the help of Alan Caron, of AC Coaching & Sports Development, which specialises in the development of multi-sport clubs, supports development within sporting charities and promotes disability awareness and education. Alan is a multi-skilled coach specialising in various disability sports including wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby and sledge hockey.
RGK will also have some special guests– members of the GB Men’s Wheelchair Basketball squad, which RGK sponsor, will be attending the show so members of the public can have a go at shooting hoops against the professionals and also pick up some tips in the process!
On Thursday, Richard Sargent will be attending – he plays for the Wolverhampton Rhinos and is a young member of the GB squad.
On Friday, Matt Byrne will be attending. Matt also plays for Wolverhampton Rhinos and was a member of the GB that took bronze in the 2008 Beijing Paralympics. Matt is also in the team for the upcoming World Championships which take place in Birmingham from 7th to 17th July.
On Saturday, Lee Manning will be attending the show. Lee plays for the Wolverhampton Rhinos and is a young member of the GB squad.
On the Saturday, the Red Wheelies, a scooter formation display team, will be putting on some shows throughout the day for people to watch.

GB Men win Paralympic World Cup title
The GB Men’s Wheelchair Basketball team are the Paralympic World Cup champions after beating Canada 53-42 in the final held at Manchester.
The team took the gold medal in a game which they led for all but three minutes.
Leading scorers were Jon Pollock with 17 points and 10 assists, and former RGK employee Ian Sagar, with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
Jon Pollock said “It was a good game. It was great to be in the final with Canada”. He added “I feel that we are gradually getting better. Today we were much better than two-three weeks ago during trainings. So to win the BT Paralympic World Cup is a big step for us”.
In the fight for the bronze medal, Australia beat Italy 65-32.
In the women’s tournament, Canada beat The Netherlands 62-46 to take the gold medal. GB were beaten to the bronze medal by Australia, who won the game 59-24 after an even first half.
All teams are now in preparation for the World Championships which take place in Birmingham on 7th – 17th July.
Wheelchair Basketball World Championships 2010
The World Championships are taking place at Birmingham NIA from 7th – 17th July.
Twenty-two teams (12 men’s and 10 women’s) from 16 different countries will be taking part in the Championships, making it the biggest wheelchair basketball event before the 2012 Paralympic Games in London.
The Great Britain Men’s team are looking to repeat their success of the Paralympic Games, where they took the gold. The team will be made up of the following players:
Abdi Jama, Kevin Hayes, Matt Sealy, Simon Brown, Jon Pollock, Ade Orogbemi, John Hall, Ian Sagar, Simon Munn, Dan Highcock, Terry Bywater and Joe Bestwick. The reserves are Peter Finbow, Matt Byrne, Harry Brown and Gaz Choudhry.
GB Men’s Head Coach, Murray Treseder, said “We have selected the best team possible for the UK”.
The GB Women’s team will be made up of a number of young players and hope to make an impact at the World Championships. Head Coach, Garry Peel, selected his team after playing a number of warm-up tournaments, where he was able to give those with less experience a chance to play. The team will be made up of the following players:
Caroline Maclean, Fran Ray, Clare Strange, Helen Freeman, Laurie Williams, Judith Hamer, Amy Conroy, Maddie Thompson, Helen Turner, Louise Sugden, Pauline McDonald and Caroline Matthews.
