GOSH Fundraising Event

RGK are delighted to be supporting a fundraising event at the Emirates Stadium to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Paul Smith from Portsmouth will be carrying out a sponsored wheelchair push around the stadium, home of Arsenal football team, on Saturday 17th April. Paul’s target is to complete 51 laps of the stadium which works out at over 20 miles!

Paul, who is an Arsenal supporter, did the same event last year raising money for the Teenage Cancer Trust. He managed 15 laps of the stadium in his NHS wheelchair, but believes that his target of 51 laps is achievable in a lightweight wheelchair. RGK were more than happy to step in and loan Paul a chair to help him achieve his target.

Russel Simms, RGK’s Commercial Director, handed the chair over to Paul last weekend so that he could begin his training in it.

RGK would like to wish Paul all the best with his fundraising event and hope that he reaches his target of raising £20,000 for Great Ormond Street Hospital.

New Wheels for 2010

In partnership with Sun Components, RGK are delighted to announce two new wheels to the range available from RGK:

Fusion16

Fusion16 is a daily use wheel with a 16-spoke lacing pattern which provides open access and functionality. 8 radial laced spokes increase side load integrity when cambered, and 8 cross laced spokes increase wheel rotational integrity (stiffness).

The spokes are 12 gauge (stronger than standard 14 gauge) which allows reduced spoke count and weight with increased strength. The double wall black anodised rim is optimized for weight and strength.

Equalizer

Equalizer is a wheel for sports use with a 48 spoke, 4 cross lacing pattern that provides rotational rigidity and impact resistance. 24 radial laced spokes increase side load integrity when cambered, and 24 cross laced spokes increase wheel rotational stiffness (start faster, quicker turns).

The spokes are 14 gauge black stainless steel, and the double wall black anodised rim is optimized for weight and strength.

Both are now available for order on new bespoke chair builds and also on the RGK Online shop.

Inline Sledge Hockey Launch

Last month we told you about the launch of Inline Sledge Hockey, a new sport based on Ice Sledge Hockey. The launch took place on the weekend of 19th December at Bisley, Woking, and was an instant success.

Three games were played over two days - two between the Hull Stingrays and the Grimsby Redwings, and the third being between a combined Stingrays/Redwings team and a number of Ice and Inline Hockey players, including current GB Inline Hockey players.

The final game saw the Stingrays/Redwings team win by a comfortable 7-0 margin, demonstrating to any sceptics that Inline Sledge Hockey is a genuine physical contact sport and not just a token nod to allowing disabled and able bodied people to play together.

Inline

Inline Sledge Hockey was originally the brainchild of Paralympian Matt Lloyd, however it has been developed through the dedication and commitment of several key organistaions including the Hull Stingrays Elite League Ice Hockey Team, the British Sledge Hockey Association, Wheelpower, the BritishInline Puck Hockey Association and RGK Wheelchairs.

Such has been the response to Inline Sledge Hockey that it looks likely that there will be enough teams launched for an Inline Sledge Hockey League to be established within the next year.

For more information about the RGK Inline Sledge, click here or contact Russel Simms at RGK. If you want to know more about the sport, contact Matt Lloyd of the BHSA at: matt@sledgehockey.co.uk.

Inline Sledge Hockey Promotion Day

On 27th February 2010, a festival of Sledge Hockey will be held in the Humberside area. There is a plan for the day which will run as follows:

Hull Stingrays vs Grimsby Redwings (10am Hull Ice Arena)

A charity ice sledge hockey game will be staged between the Hull Stingrays and the Grimsby Redwings to raise money for the charity Cash 4 Kids. Each team will be made up of GB Sledge Hockey players, sledge hockey club players, ice hockey players and radio personalities. There will be a live radio feed to Viking FM, refreshments, games for kids between periods, cheerleaders, and much more.

Have A Go Sessions (2pm Grimsby Leisure Centre)

There will be a number of have-a-go sessions at Grimsby Leisure Centre to give people the opportunity to try Sledge Hockey. These sessions will be supported by Viking FM.

Hull Stingrays vs Coventry Blaze Elite League Ice Hockey Game (5:30pm Hull Ice Arena)

The Stingrays will be promoting Sledge Hockey at the game and each time will have a sledge hockey mascot come put onto the ice. There will also be short demo games between periods.

The event is free to enter – visit Viking FM for more details and to register for free tickets.

Wolves Rhinos on Match of the Day

Just before Christmas the RGK TCAT Rhinos appeared on Match Of The Day 2 on the BBC as part of the Wolverhampton Wanderers FC charity Wolves Aid. Wolves Aid has given funding to help support the Rhinos community programme, which supports wheelchair sports in the West Midlands.
